Sway Bar Nyliners

Background

While developing a new sway bar setup for our World Challenge Cougar, I decided to build a different mounting system...similar to the SRF...i.e. a split aluminum pillow block with a plastic “Nyliner” bearing.  In researching the Nyliner, I found a bit of interesting information.

Lubrication and the Nyliner
Overview
The SRF sway bars ride in Type 5 Thomson Nyliner flanged bearings.

These bearings are typically billed as “self-lubricating” and I always took that for granted...and never lubed them.  But in looking at Thomson’s data for these bearings, I found that the load they can carry increases dramatically if you lubricate them with oil.  For the 91/6" diameter bearing used on the SRF, the Nyliner has a dry load rating of 95 pounds.  The lubricated load rating is 290 pounds!

Summary
The message is simple, oil your Nyliners.
