Road Atlanta: "Drift Atlanta" - Race 2

5th 4th

On track at Road Atlanta in May, 2006

Notes & Excuses: Trying to save money on tires made us slower and slower as the weekend progressed.  I'll explain all below..  It was still great to run with the IMSA Lites series.  Both races were won by Johnny Merrigi..

Two things of interest:
1) Be sure your alternator is tight (and that you're using hardened washers).  We lost our alternator belt due to the alternator moving.
2) Tires -- saving money here is not a good idea.  We decided to "get our money's worth" out of the tires.  The tires are great, but we pushed the envelope too far.  We ran 6 heat cycles on them and then we ran them backwards for the 7th heat cycle.  After about the 4th heat cycle, the performance dropped off.  At little at first, and then more and more.  So while there was PLENTY of tread left, the reality is that the tires don't perform as well later in their life.  And running them backwards didn't hurt (but it didn't help either).

Mid-Ohio: American LeMans at Mid-Ohio - Race 2

4th 3rd

It was WET at Mid-Ohio

Notes & Excuses: This race was a total monsoon.  It rained, and rained, and rained.  The one dry event was Race 1....and we broke, more about that below.  Actually the car does pretty well in the rain but you've got to be gentle on the throttle....just ask Robert.  He was about to pass Johnny Merrigi for 2nd in race #2, when excitement lead to too much pressure on the throttle and around Robert went.  Both races were won by Richard Spicer -- he ruled..

Ok, here's what we learned:
1) Johnny Merrigi lost a clutch.  The reason was that during one of the many wet sessions, Johnny spun off the track and went thru the mud.  That mud came up thru the opening in the bell housing and got packed BEHIND the throw-out bearing.  This caused the clutch to slip (since the throw-out bearing couldn't fully retract) and that lead to the failure of the clutch shortly there after.
2) On lap 1 of race 1, we broke a transmission input shaft.  This was an original shaft and we got about 1,100 miles of service on it.  It's pretty clear to me that the failure is the combination of the shaft's design and construction and Robert's driving style.  In all the cars we've ever raced, we always have had to "upgrade" the driveline.  Robert is somewhat notorious for going through axles and transmissions.

Lime Rock: "New England Grand Prix" with ALMS - Race 2

3rd 4th

Robert, Charlie Shears and Chris Funk bounce around Lime Rock.

Notes & Excuses: Not much to say here.  This track is really an oval...and you need to set the car up that way.  The coin didn't drop for us until the very end.  Both races were won (dominated) by Richard Spicer.

One note: we broke every body floor support strut on the car.  A new, cable-based support system is in the works.

Road America: "Generac 500" with ALMS - Race 2

3rd 1st

Robert on the podium with Adam Pecorari and Duncan Ende, the L1 and L2 winners, respectively.

Notes & Excuses: A great event for us.  We broke another input shaft (360 miles on it this time), but overall things went great.  We won both races.

As an aside, we now hold the L3 track record at Road America with a 2:19.123 lap time.
