Removing
the SRF Engine and Transaxle |
Background |
Weve
done A LOT of engine and transaxle swaps over the years. It seems most of them were
done at the track (and in 100 degree heat). Over the years weve gotten it down
to a less-than 3 hour process. Heres how we do it. |
|
Engine Change Only |
- Remove the left-rear axle nut.
- Put rear of car on blocks.
- Remove the rear wheels.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Remove right front radiator hose to drain. (Note,
unscrew the expansion tank cap after the hose is disconnected to drain all the water).
- Remove the air box as a unit, complete with
mounting bracket and hoses.
- Remove the throttle cable from throttle body and
put in the right-rear wheel area.
- Remove the bolt or pin from alternator adjuster.
- Remove the large pulley from crankshaft (this
makes pulling the engine out easier).
- Remove the large alternator bolt and lay
alternator with wires attached on right side bodywork.
- Remove the expansion tank and ½" hose to
water manifold.
- Remove the tailpipes from the exhaust header.
Leave the header on the motor.
- Remove the starter and disconnect wires from
block, senders and all rear electrics.
- Cut wire ties holding wires and hoses to the
frame.
- Disconnect the oil cooler lines and fuel lines
from engine and pull to right side of car where wheel used to be. Note, capping these
hoses with AN caps is a nice touch.
- Disconnect the large shifter bolt which connects
the shift linkage u-joint to the transaxle.
- Disconnect the coolant hoses from right and left
side of engine.
- Drop the left-rear LCA from the LBJ pin and pull
axle out of left rear knuckle.
- Attach engine sling and hoist.
- Remove upper right-rear motor mount.
- Be sure that you do not drop the motor or
transaxle on the fuel pump connections as this can break the pump (expensive). You could
remove the pump for safety if it looks like it could hit. We have broken a pump this way!
- Loosen the left-rear transaxle mount (this has to
eventually come off transaxle and frame and note the way it comes out.)
- Loosen the right-front motor mount.
- Remove all transaxle to engine mount bolts (be
sure you get the ones on the front and bottom). There should be 7 bolts total.
- Remove bolts from left-upper transaxle mount and
push the mount up into space between the brake line and frame.
- Remove the left-lower transaxle mount and then the
right-front motor mount bolt which you previously loosened.
- The engine should now separate from the transaxle.
Pull the transaxle to the left side of the frame to separate the motor/transaxle as you
lift the motor.
- Rotate the motor slightly to clear the header. Watch
out that you dont catch the master switch wires and the fire extinguisher nozzle.
- Reverse the procedure except the transaxle to
engine bolts are installed before the mount bolts. The left-rear transaxle mount should go
on the transaxle first and then install the other mounts.

- Drop left-rear and right-rear LCAs from the
LBJ pins and pull axles out of left and right rear knuckles.
- Remove the axles from the transaxle. The axles are
held in the transaxle by a compression ring. The axles will pop out if you can
"snap-pull" them. We have CAREFULLY used a large screwdriver to wedge them out.
There is a tool with a sliding weight used at auto shops to remove the axles, but you
should be able to pop them out without it. Regardless, there is a very real chance you
will damage the axle seals, so you should have two on hand as replacements before you
start.
