Engine and Transmission Stands

Background
Sooner or later you’ll acquire an extra engine or transmission. You’ll then want to take it with you wherever you go.  The stands described below work really well for keeping your parts intact while they travel.  We’ve used them both for years.  In addition, they make a nice way to hold your engine and transmission while you’re rebuilding the car over the winter.
These stands are easy to build, but you either have to be able to weld or know someone who can.
The Engine Stand
The stand is shown in the drawing below.  The stand will accommodate an engine with all of its accessories mounted (i.e., header, motor plate, clutch and flywheel, motor mounts, alternator bracket, and oil filter adapters).  Having all this stuff already mounted on the motor sure speeds up engine changes.  The stand was also designed to allow construction of a “box” around the motor if you so desire.  Click on the “thumbnail” picture to get a full size drawing to print.

Construction Notes
Engine_Stand.jpg (9019 bytes)As shown on the print, the stand is made entirely from 1" square steel tubing.   I’ve specified 18 gauge, but you could obviously use a heavier tube.  The picture on the right is of an earlier version of the stand and doesn’t match the print.  I’ve included it to give you an idea of the basic design.  READ THE PRINT.
The best way I’ve found to build these stands is:
1) Cut all tubing to length.
2) Build the rectangular bottom frame first.
3) Drill the 7/16" hole in the 10 1/4" tube.
4) Weld the vertical tubes (the 8", 8 3/8",10 1/4" and 11" tubes) to the bottom frame.
5) Weld the horizontal tubes (14 3/8" and 15 3/8") to the vertical tubes.
6) Put a motor in the stand.
7) Drill the 7/16" hole in the 11 inch tube.
The Transmission Stand
This stand is really simple.  Click on the “thumbnail” picture to get a full size drawing to print.
